Imagine that you’re in a room where someone is talking but you cannot hear them because you don’t have your hearing aids in. You turn them on, tune them right and then you begin to hear.
The thing is, they did not just begin to speak when you put the hearing aids on. They were speaking before then —you just couldn’t hear it until you tuned in by turning your hearing on.
As a Christian, God has been speaking the whole time, and He speaks through His Word, He speaks through a small still voice when you pray and listen.
When you open the Bible and begin to read, something you’ve read many times before can suddenly feel new and alive. It’s not because the words changed, but because you’re now able to hear them. Sometimes because that’s the message for that particular time, for that season.
What you hear has purpose. Even if you don’t understand why a particular verse stands out, there is a reason it has been highlighted in your heart.
Picking up the Bible to read, study, and meditate is like putting my hearing aids in and turning them on.
And when I do, I often wonder why I waited so long. Hearing Him brings peace, clarity, and awareness of His presence.
When that peace comes—the kind that surpasses understanding—I know without doubt that God has confirmed something within me. There’s no formula or special method to it. It’s not about technique. It’s about relationship. It’s about intimacy.
